Ukraine proposes inviting Russia to a peace summit.
Ukraine and its international partners are considering inviting Russia to a peace summit
Ukraine and its international partners are considering inviting Russia to a peace summit to discuss an end to Moscow’s invasion on Kyiv’s terms, according to a senior Ukrainian official. The summit, sponsored by Switzerland, aims to explore a vision for peace and may offer a plan to Russia at a later meeting.
Andriy Yermak, Chief of Staff of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, remarked that if the aggressor country truly wishes to end the war and achieve a just peace, representatives from the Russian Federation could be invited to the summit.
Zelenskiy first submitted his peace plan at a Group of 20 conference in November 2022, which focuses on restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and the complete departure of Russian soldiers. However, Kyiv has stated unequivocally that it will only engage in negotiations with Moscow until all Russian forces have left Ukrainian soil.
The Kremlin has denied the prospect of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, stating that Kyiv’s peace plan is nonsensical because it excludes Russia.
